PayPal Offers a Credit Card Reader for Brick and Mortar Businesses

The first big move, in my opinion, that PayPal made was when they made it possible for non-PayPal members to use a PayPal merchant account on sites.

When I visit new businesses thinking about adding a merchant account and selling online I usually tell them that if they are not selling $2000 a month then it would be best to go with a third party merchant account instead of a merchant account of their own. One, because of the cost savings, and two I would recommend it for businesses just starting out.

Now PayPal is offering credit card readers that posts automatically to your PayPal Virtual Terminal order form. Since this card reader can be plugged into a USB port of a computer it would be handy when you travel to meet customers.

You can read more about this credit card reader here.

Googles New Browser called Google Chrome

Hello Everyone!,

Sorry for not posting lately, but I’ve been pretty busy. My post today will be on Google’s new browser called Google Chrome. You can download it from Google’s site at http://www.google.com/chrome.

I’ve always been a Firefox fan, but when I upgraded to version 3 I had problems with some of my add ons that forced me to downgrade to version 2. Also, when logging into certain sites I’m finding that more and more that I am forced to use Internet Explorer because Firefox leaves off the submit button when trying to log in.

So are we ready for yet another browser???

As a web designer I already have to design web sites so that they look great in Safari, Internet Explorer (and all of its versions with IE6 being the biggest pain), and Firefox. Now web designers everywhere will have to consider how their web sites will look in Google’s new browser called Chrome.

If anyone has installed and used Google’s new browser please leave a comment on this post.

I just read a killer article title entitled, “Google steals Microsoft code and you should cheer” that prompted me to read further. You can find this article at ZDnet. It is an interesting read and I agree with there comments on how this can be beneficial for everyone.

Google and Yahoo wheelin’ and dealin’

Google and Yahoo signed an agreement allowing Google to place paid search ads on yahoo for the next 10 years.

You can read the details over at Advertising Age.
You can read the pros and cons discussed over at Search Engine Land.

Things still have been pretty busy over here lately, but in other news I read that MySpace was looking into becoming a portal like yahoo.com. Will keep you posted if anything turns up.

Google now owns an SEO Company

Google has acquired the search engine optimization Performics which is a subsidiary of the company Doubleclick that Google bought. You can’t help but wonder what Google is going to be doing with this company. What better company to have do your SEO work than a company that is owned by Google, right? Or not?

Would they make more money by implementing what they do with search? Or would they be secretive yet and not let the newly acquired company know it’s secrets? Or has there search algorithm grown to the point there simply is no secret to getting to the top of Google anymore?

My belief is that the last question is the true one and if it isn’t true now, it will be true in the near future. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. SEO (search engine optimization) is changing where it is becoming merged with SEM (search engine marketing) more and more everyday.

4/6/08 - Heres an update.

It looks like Google will be selling off the SEO company that it acquired through the purchase of Double click. It would have wreaked havoc with everyone if they had kept it and it is probably a good thing that they are selling it.

   This is Dirty Business Tactics!

I may get in trouble with this one, but this business tactic that Network Solutions use is what my dad would call ‘dirty pool’. Dirty pool is the tactic of scratching the cue ball on purpose to force the other playing to play from the ‘kitchen’ on the pool table.

Here is an excerpt from SitePoint newsletter that I receive. . .

When you run a search on a domain name to see if it’s registered, be prepared to buy it on the spot if it’s available.

You see, if you check a domain’s availability with Network Solutions, the registrar will put it on “reserve” (which effectively means that it registers the domain).

Then, the only place you can register the domain name is with Network Solutions — at its chosen price.

Network Solutions still charge an enormous price of $35 per year for a domain name that you can get for $8.95 many other places and to think that if you perform a search through Nutwork Solutions (misspelling intentional) you are forced to buy it from them makes me sick to my stomach! I still consider this to be a dirty practice!

Google product listed as product requirement

I was surprised to come across this when exploring Quickbooks options . . .

Disk Space Requirements for Additional Software

* 50MB for Microsoft .NET 2.0 Runtime, provided on the QuickBooks CD
* Google Desktop Search (in-product search) space requirements are determined by the size of the company file and the nature of usage. It is not unusual for indices to be as large as 1GB

To me it says a lot to have a major software developer to have Google Desktop Search as a requirement. It kind of makes you think doesn’t it?

Yahoo rejects MSN offer of Buyout

It looks like that Yahoo did not accept the $44.6 Billion from Microsoft offer to buy there company. This development will be interesting for stock holders in MSN, Yahoo, and Google. Stockholders are trying to guess what is going to happen and decide whether or not to buy or sell stock in these major corporations.

To read more about this development please go to Yahoo! News.

MSN making an offer to buy Yahoo!

Microsoft is offering 44.6 Billion dollars to buy the Yahoo! company.

. . . In a statement Friday, Yahoo said it will “carefully and promptly” study Microsoft’s bid . . .

If this happen MSN will definitely have a bigger share of the search market against Google. You can read more about this announcement here.

   Google is going green!

No, I don’t mean money. I mean green as in environmental friendly. With a corporation as large as Google I’m glad to see that they are taking steps to help out our environment and yes my faith is that Google is NOT evil!

Here is the post if you want to read more about it.
